It'll be a while before I can make this purchase, but I wanted to know what you guys think about which MR2 I should get. I think I want a spyder, the 3rd gen, but the turbo wouldn't be bad either. Its got a lot more power and is faster in a line than the 3rd gen but weighs 600 lbs more, is older/less reliable. I will most likely be autoxing at first and hopefully track days soon after. I was thinking about turbo-ing the 3rd gen, that would make it pretty sweet. I heard you can get from 140 hp to 200 with less than 5psi, which would be cool. Just lmk what you think about either car. thanks. -Eric
I dont know how they would compare at an auto-x. The mkII definitely is capable of more power but as far as the chassis, they're both good. I'd say the spyder is would be more reliable just because its newer but the 3s-gte is pretty solid.
Oh I can speak with experience on this one. Spyder's are the quickest at the AutoX hands down. BUT THEY SUCK. No trunk space, and they are ugly. The SW20 NA is a really good autocross slut, the turbos usually are slower. The nice thing about the SW's is how practical they really are. Lost of trunk space, the cabins are roommie, I'm 6'3" and I had a ton of space in mine, two trunks (front trunk is the best for groceries) and not to mention what a sexy bitch that car is.
If I was to do it all over again, it would be a stripper SW20, no T-Tops unless you like water dripping on your left leg while its raining, with a V6 swap. With that age of car, you will have to go thru the suspension anyways and why not upgrade the brakes while you are at it (91+ turbo brakes) Done and Done.
The big downfall to a Mid engine car in Florida is how it acts when it is raining. The front end being light with the ass-end that acts as a big pendulum when things go bad is something to think about in a state that has a monsoon season.
All in all, if I could afford it, I would have me another SW20 at the drop of a hat.
