I've been slowly working on it. Its really close to being race ready. I've actually been buying parts and crossing tasks off lists. I finally fixed the shifter cables so now it actually goes into all the gears. Got the axle seal for the tranny and radiator hose (just gotta go pick it up from discount). Now in the spirit of the MR2 I'm gonna make another list.
Get coolant overflow bottle and install it Install rad hose and fill coolant get manifold and make sick exhaust get bolts for seat and rear engine mount mount fuel cell water temp gauge
what abt that wiring loom? I'd say it needs some kind of heat protection. it also seems vulnerable to stretching/breaking with engine movement and chafing at the firewall.
have you looked at the mounts, specifically the bushings and bolts?

the firewalls need sealed up.
Chafing of the loom will definately be addressed. I'll probably just put a rubber grommet in. I think it will be ok as far as heat goes but I have another harness that will go in eventually anyways so if the wires get brittle then I'll change it and add some heat protection.
The mounts are decent. They're all really old but oh well. We're missing one bolt in the rear. I might go to the junkyard tommorrow if so I'll pick one up.
well if i were you i would seal up the fire wall. Go get some dyno-mat and cover up the fire wall. If is like 25 bucks at best buy and it will seal up the firewall.
25 bucks!? We dont have the budget for that. I personally dont think its that big of a deal. Theres really only the one hole that the harness goes through and possibly some empty bolt holes.
We went to the junkyard today and picked up a sick 4th gen camry manifold. Its one of the few stock manifolds that I've seen that isnt cast iron. Its actually tubular and from the looks of it flows well. It was kinda tough to get in but it fits perfect. Also picked up an overflow bottle and a bolt for the rear mount. I installed the bolt with a little bit of nature's lock tite (cross-thread).
So I think the only parts that are needed are hood pins and a water temp gauge.
I did some more work on it yesterday. I started building the exhaust. Its not all welded up cause I ran out of wire but its all there. We decided to take it out the back rather than out the hole in the side like I wanted. I fired it up and started tuning. I'm kinda worried about the oil pressure. The gauge read about 10-15psi. I changed the oil cause that oil is about a year old and mixed with a bunch of gas. That seemed to help a little. I didnt change the filter though so I guess it could be choking up the oil some. I'm also not even sure how accurate that gauge is. What do you guys think?
The ignition signal also needs a little work. Its a little jumpy up to about 2500rpm and then cleans out. A resistor on the ground should fix that.
The tire is flat but I still drove it around. It was amazingly fun to just drive it after so long.
The water temp was in the 170's. I'll throw the new filter on next time I'm up there.
My friend's boss welded up the exhaust yesterday. Its far better than I would have done. Pardon the ugly muffler but it was free and actually sounds good.

Does it sit out back all crooked like all the civics here in orlando? cause apparently those are hella sweet
I went by today and installed the exhuast. It fits good. Kinda surprising because alot of the angles changed slightly cause he closed the gaps before he welded it. Also put a new oil filter in. I wish I could have started it to hear the exhaust and check the oil pressure but I drove my dads car up there and his battery sucks alot and wouldnt crank it and the mr2 battery is dead. I brought it home though so I can charge it.
I pulled out the alternator. Anyone know how to wire it up? Or how to get a belt to fit without the AC compressor in there.
I went by today for a little bit to fire it up. The exhaust sounds pretty sick. It actually quited it down a good bit. Its weird now that it fires up and sounds good. For the first time it seems like a real car. I never thought it would ever get there.
The oil pressure seemed better after the new filter. I'm not sure if I got it fully warmed up but the oil pressure never went low.
20+ of course it varies with rpm but it never went below 20
update: I havent had a chance to go work on it in a few days. I got the wheels mounted and put em on. So right now it has 2 hankooks in the rear on tri-spokes. When we get the two 225s. They'll go on the sportmaxs and go in the rear. When I put the wheels on I couldnt resist taking it for a spin. It started up perfect and drove good but then it suddenly died. So I think that rpm signal problem I mentioned earlier was a loose wire somehwere. Thats not surprising since the ms plug is all soldered together. Me and Viet had to push it back to the garage. Next time I work on it I'm gonna put in the new harness and drill a new hole in the firewall to keep it away from the exhaust. Also gonna wire in some headlights and taillights.
probably true, diagnosing future problems related to the shadyness of the current harndess/connector could add up to significantly more headaches than just doing it correctly now
Well there is no latest. I havent worked on it for a long time. I'm planning on working on it sometime though. I've been busy with school but thats no more.
I still plan on making it just a fun autocross or track day car but first of all I'm gonna see where I'll be living and then decide what to do with it.
Well I think everything talked about in this thread has been done. The MR2 has been a very interesting progress. I think we've had it 3 or 4 years now and it has slooowwwwwllllllyyyy been turning into a fun car to drive. Its hard to beleive thats its still around and actually still a project. I still think it will make a decent track day car or weekend trip to the mountains car. Nothing on the car is expensive at all so I dont have to worry about breaking it too much and its as simple as it can get.
So here's another update:
honda wheels and azenis (viet donated the wheels and lou donated the tires) complete new wiring harness ran slightly differently alternator installed with a belt on it hood pins half installed (my drill battery went dead) waterjetted coil bracket and vr sensor bracket (needs to be installed) started wiring tails and alternator registered and insured it lol
things i wish we hadnt done:
we should of kept the side skirts and front bumper we shouldnt have taken the windows out and cut out the door skin
Theres ALOT of play in the steering wheel. Although I think it may just be the bushings. I hear the bushings are cheap from the dealer. I'll probably pick some up one day
