A4 Project: Round II

I'll start off my A4 project here. VR6 in the A4

I've been selling some stuff so I'm gonna be ordering the adapter plate to bolt the vr6 to the tranny soon. I think saturday I'm shooting for pulling out the 1.8t and cleaning the engine bay out as much as possible to get it ready to fit a vr6.

So here's how I'm planning the build up

Mount VR6 in and sort out all plumbing and wiring issues.
get it running solid
body work. paint it some crazy color
suspension. I plan to do alot with developing a good chasis setup.
figure out how to fit a set of hoosier 275s

That is alot but I am not rushing it. Gonna take my time.

And now for some inspiration:
Its been done

So I test fitted the V8

It fits so perfect and judging from me and Viet lifting them out of the 4runner, the V8 might even be a little lighter than the VR6. So I'd wrather swap the V8 but theres some problems. It could cost alot to get the v8 fixed and all the needed parts to make it run. Also if it blew up then it would be over. There would be no way I could afford the 4k bones for a new one. So probably gonna stick with the VR6 but I'm at least gonna look into it. And that decision will be soon because I got the adaper plate for the VR6 yesterday so I'll probably start on the mounts this weekend.

WOOOO. Hold the phone.... what V8 is that.... and how can you look at that and think VR6?

What needs to be done to get that motor running. I have some pretty sweet ideas already running through my head on this...

Wow, that would be awesome.

While I totally think that V8 is absolutely gangster material, I think the points you bring up are important. What if it supernovas and implodes on itself? Mad skrilla...yo. And, as this is the first time I got to watch those videos up top. That A4 is fuggin quick. Like real quick. But I think it's all up to you. It would be awesome to sail into uncharted waters and use the V8, if it ran proper, and didn't eff the weight balance up a bunch, it would sick! I demand at least one video with straight pipes BTW. And just think! Two opposing banks of four throttle bodies! You do realize it would have to have open throttles right....right? biggrin

Its the newer S4 engine. 4.2L 40-valve v8. I really want to use it mainly because of the instant torque it would provide. Also I've never seen it done.

Here's what it would take to make it run.

fix hole in block - sounds bad but its from an accident not a broken rod. So it would need a small piece of pipe welded in and then the block would need to be tanked

    fab - headers
            itb's or intake manifold
            fuel rails
            some coolant pipes
            some block off plates

buy oil filter bracket and injectors

buy flywheel - this would be the decision maker. If I could even find a flywheel for a reasonable price then hopefully my clutch would fit it but if not then I would need an S4 clutch too which wouldnt be cheap.

Its a good amount of stuff to do and there's probably more. Might be worth it though.

I've been trying to find parts for the v8 and I havent found anything. Nothing used, nothing online, nothing anywhere. So its back to the original vr6 plan. Still keeping the v8 though.........someday

So while this project sits idle waiting.....What do you guys think on paint?

I'm leaning towards orange cause I really like orange cream sickles. What ever color it is it will be flat because I'm doing it on the cheap and will most likely be painting it myself in my buddy's paint booth.

the rust orange like the GRM civic that they had would be cool.

VR6 is in......

I was just looking for a place to put the engine and there happened to be a big empty space under the hood so I put it there.

Nope they are on hockey pucks.

I might add another brace to the driver side mount because of how far back the mount goes. It makes a huge torque at the mounting flange.

I'm gonna start my to-do list. Its going to be really long right now. I'm trying to take a little more quality build up this time.

-finish up the mounts - I'm gonna add one more brace and paint them.

-buy a good engine - the engine in the car now is just for mock up and possibly for building later

-modify oil pan - theres some clearance issues with the subframe

-buy flywheel - its a custom one from 034motorsports

-choose turbo(s) - I'm thinking about going with 2 14b turbos. They're cheap and relatively small so they will spool fast yet still flow some cfm cause theres 2.

-design manifolds - you can do some cool stuff with the manifolds because of how the runners in the head are different lengths, like twin turbo setups. I'm trying to learn some 3d modeling software so I'll see if I can design them with that.

-plumbing - i'll just put all the rest of the stuff like coolant, exhaust and charge piping here

-wire it up - make the wiring harness for megasquirt

-buy trunk and bumper

-pull the damage in the rear

-paint the car

-measure suspension geometry - i want to model the suspension in a program called susprog3d. It gives you roll centers, camber curves, etc and helps you decide on stuff like what roll stiffness to run

-do the suspension - right now i'm thinking ground controls and revalving my shocks, also some sway bars

-choose wheels and tires - probably gonna go with a 275 r-compound

-mount the race seat

I think thats it for now. It seems like alot right now but its gonna be done over a good period of time. Hopefully, when I'm done I will have shaved off some seconds from my auto-x times. Thats the plan anyways.

I decided on some turbos. I'll be using 2 k-03 turbos. They're small so should spool really good and still make decent power. The compressor maps actually looked good if I use 2. They're also cheap and readily available, (I already have one). I'm making that a big part of the build up. Everything needs to be cheap, readily available and easy to swap out so later on down the road when I dont have time to work on the car and just want to race, it will be an easy car to deal with yet still plenty of fun.

I still think t3s are a better choice. considering that there are 2 already available and i think oil lines should be a bit easier to get a hold of.

Maybe later on a built block but for now I just want quick spool.

So the engine plans became simpler. For time and money reasons I'm gonna use a single t3/t4 with a cast manifold and also the stock intake manifold. Now I just need to sell the rx7 so I can finish it. It will go quick once that happens but I guess I suck at selling cars cause I havent sold it yet.

And here's some pictures.
This is what I was planning for the intake manifold.

This is what is going to happen with the intake manifold.

Ahhhh why do I suck at selling things so bad? I still havent sold the rx7 or the 1.8t block.

Anyone have any tips or anything?
