I was thinking about what I want to do with my car and I came up with a list of what I want out of the car. So now its my turn to write a long explanation of why I'm selling my car.
Heres what I want to do 1. Go to the Autcross nationals next year with a competitive car 2. Do more track days 3. Drive a safer car 4. Carry more than 2 people 5. Drive a rediculously fast car
Now here's my plans
Option #1 1. Sell the RX7 and hopefuly make a little money on it 2. Buy an engine........a VR6 3. Install VR6 into Audi 4. Fix damage, new bumper and trunk and paint the car 5. Buy wheels and tires.....very sticky tires 6. design a sick suspension 7. strip down the car......maybe
I already have an A4 so when I sell the RX7 I can just use all that money on the A4. An S4 has won nationals in the past so the platform has potential to be competitive. I know I obviously dont have the experience or funding to win but it'd be really fun trying and its a good goal that i could learn alot from. The VR6 is just a cool engine and they're relatively cheap so if i blew one on the track then it wouldnt be a huge problem getting another one. A turbo would indeed be in the future or perhaps a supercharger but originally i think I'd go N/A. I would probably paint the car orange. It would still be white on the inside so it would look like a giant orange creamsickle...mmmm. For wheels I was thinking 16x10 diamonds with Kumho Victoracers or V710s or azenis for the time being. Need opinions there. Suspension would be getting coilovers with some good valving and of course other stuff. So thats option 1.
Option #2 I dont have an option 2 so please provide me one.
Basically, I need a car that meets those 5 requirements. I included a safer car because I drive alot and alot of it is through city streets. I think thats my longest post and the most I've ever contemplated a car. So what do you guys think I should do?
Ok well in order to do the 1,2,3, and 4 you are not gonna be able to do 5. If you wanna carry more than 2 people wby would you strip down the car? Second if you wanna do those things making the audi into a VR6 is not gonna get you there and on top of the forced induction makes for a even more unreliable vr6, trust me i had one and i am glad i sold it. I love that motor more than anybody on this forum and that is a fact but the truth is it sucks. Now i see you getting further in something more like a real race car.....maybe a ITA car or a showroom stock car??????
· 1995 Dodge Neon ACR · 10,071 original miles, all race miles · Bolt-in Roll Cage with welded dual sidebar · Full SSC Spec Line Trunk Kit installed · Adjustable Koni Struts · Cut-off switch · Switched Cool-Shirt circuit to Trunk (Cool Shirt system not included) · Fire Suppression System
This car was an original Neon Challenge car raced at charity events around the country.
I bought it and raced it in SSC. This car was never street driven. Car runs excellent and is a reliable drive.
I just got another SSC car so this has to go $4500 including 8 wheels and spares below: SPARES INCLUDE: 4 RAIN TIRES MOUNTED (NEW KUMHO V700S FULL-TREAD) 6 HUBS, 2 KNUCKLES, 2 AXLES, COIL PACK, PLUG WIRES, 4 USED ROTORS + CARBOTECH PADS, O2 SENSOR, ROCKERS, SWAY LINKS + BRACKETS, FRONT BUMPER, BRAKE PISTON, ALT. BELT, RAD. HOSE, STOCK PARTS (MUFFLER, SEAT, AIR BAGS). Currently Kumho 710's are mounted on the car.
$3500 with no spares or extra wheels
Could be good DSP autocross car. Would need ITA or Spec Neon updates to be competitive in those racing classes -
Call me crazy but that is a good deal and I really dont think this is a good idea. You are a good driver and i wouldnt let just anybody take my car on a race track. I dont want to watch you waste your time and money on that damn audi. I know exactly whats gonna happen you are gonna do this and when it comes time to do a track day you are gonna be stuck in the pits fixing some stupid problem that you are having with the car.
So with that said I think this is about as dumb as driving 4000 miles away from home to buy a al-trac that you have to fix to drive home.......
OOO yeah just so you know I am gonna post cheap deals on race cars until you buy one......
I bought this car from a pelican member a while back on a whim. I have decided to move on to something else.
Its a great track car and its et up pretty well. Toss in a new seat and harnes and you are all set. The carpet has been removed. The paint is obviosly a cheap paint job..but it looks cool.

Car has been competitive in the 2007 NASA Time trials. This car has been proven on the following tracks this year: -VIR Full Course -VIR Patriot Course -Summit Point Shenandoah Circuit -Summit Point Main Course -RoadAtlanta -Carolina Motorsports Park -Langley Speedway (autocross) -Virginia Motorsports Park (autocross)
This is an excellent HPDE and Time Trials car. It is reliable, safe, well-balanced and a blast to drive on track. It currently is registered with a current inspection sticker - can be street driven, but it is happiest on the track at speed.
It is surprising. I believe one poster on there went from Las Vegas to Philly, 3500 miles, non stop 32 hours, in a VR. Yea...that's unreliable. But anyways. Lets look at this from another view. And I hate to be the person to do this. But Jon, are you in school? Or planning on going to school? Is this something you really NEED to do right now? There is plenty of time left to do track days, not as if Sebring is going anywhere. Just think about that too. You say you need a safe car to get you around the city..well, after a few weeks in a gutted car, you might just be putting that carpet back in. I'll post more on it later if anybody is willing to hear my point. But I'll stop there for tonight.
like i said before just ride out with the rx7 a little longer until you get out of college. then you'll hopefully have a better income to fund all this or you can get an entirely different car. i'm going to have to agree with lou on this one for once lol. You'll end up trying to fix things here and there while you miss out on what you were actually trying to do...which is race. Theres also a good chance your going to run out of funding on the project too because the total always comes up to being more then you originally thought. Plus you said you wanted to a safe car, but i don't think fixing a car with rear end damage is all too safe. if you wanna race just go get yourself a helmet and money and drive the rx7.
how much do vr6s go for these days? u make it sound like they are $500 a pop which is cheap for a motor but whens the last time u had $500 just to blow.
VR6s are actually really cheap. Right now on vortex there are 2 for 300 another for 500 and then theres that wrecked corrado in orlando but I think Steve wants that. I am in school and I graduate next may. So the plan is that I'll get a good job that pays good and then I'll buy a racecar. I dont have much need for one right now. I wont be doing any road racing or track days until after I graduate. Maybe one more if I find someone else that needs an engine built but thats about it. oh yea I'm going to school for engineering which should explain why I want to build a car. I enjoy building something and then seeing it become what I had envisioned. I think it will be an enjoyable process trying to make it as fast as possible in the cones. Even if the audi doesnt become as fast as I hope then i'll still be left with a fun daily driver.
Or you can buy my pos so i can have my driveway back. But for real, what's wrong with the rx-7?
I agree with the whole school thing. Finish school, bum for a little more while at home, build some income, and then you can drive all the f*ck you want.
Now I need to take my own advice..

I think the A4 with the VR would be friggin sweet. And as some of you know, my thoughts on rotaries is they are ticking time bombs, and there is nothing you can do about it. My same thoughts on my G-Lader, which is why I want a VR, reliability myths aside.
I'm sure the RX is fun, and god dam they look good, but I think the Audi has more class, more character, and would be far more unique with a wacky engine under the hood, and probably(probably) more reliable. Keep it simple, don't go crazy pulling out the interior, putting a cage in it, or cutting things off of it, there is a time for that, and whilst living at home, going to school, that's not the time. Later on, with a place to call your own, that's when you can wrench till 6am on a car that needs to be ready to run at 8am that day, we, I believe as a whole, I don't know how old everyone is, but are young in the grand scheme of things. My dad, at 50 years old, JUST bought the car he's wanted since he was my age, and with the money to support it, and the time to work on it, he is loving every minute of it. Not stressing out that he didn't get the right part and the car isn't going to run to get him to work the next day. God I sound like my pops now too.
For me? Reliability>everything else. If I can't get to work, I can't make money, if I don't make money, I can't buy things for the bike/car. So what would be the point of having a volatile, sometimes-really-fast-until-it-breaks car, if you can't drive it places? I'll stop ranting, I talk too much occasionally. But this is something that took me a long time to figure out, this is why my Corrado drives me everywhere, with a/c, stereo, p/s and all that, and the bike is in 4 million pieces in the garage, because I can. That's something totally new to me, and it's effing sweet.
Steve
P.S. Jon if you want that Rado, grab it. I'm not in a super hurry, but I'll go halves on it if you let me get parts off of it, that is, after I get a hold of Lou and figure out whats good on it. But the engine is yours if you want.
Hey Jon and steve, b4 you go wanting to get a VR6 why dont you both talk to my buddy chris who has had 3 motors and 1 built head........He doesnt have alot of mods and he will tell you owning a VR comes with a big price. Yeah mine could have made it to cali.......I am not sayin they cant cruise accross the country but i am sure they are stock or really stock like mine was(intake exhaust and cams) Jon wants a boosted VR?!?!?!?!?!?!Ok so run 12psi on a stock VR cause you can and then 6 months later you will need a nother one or that one rebuilt......Have fun with that, OOOO and when your VR AUDI is not at an auto x cause it is not running you can drive my car jon.
This is a really stupid Idea.........LEARN HOW TO BE A BETTER DRIVER THEN BUILD A CAR!!!!!!!!!!! I drive a slow honda and you know what i had fun and it was a great car at sebring......But remember all the work that we did to get it there cause it was a swapped car.
for a while i always thought to beat the next guy i needed a bunch of ****. and then i got into trackdays and autocross's and i realized that no one notices the car anymore, they only see the driver, what he can do and what he did. and at the end of the day he is recognized for that. you can build car, and be forgotten. i was, i had the beetle, and no one knew who i was. i've taken 5 trophies home from martin auto cross and my competitor hopes that i don't show up so that he can have a chance to win. it's a much better feeling to have a greater skill for driving and be recognized for that. instead of being the guy who drives that car.

I see all your points entirely and its good to know that you guys dont want me to do something stupid. Well to what Lucas said, I dont care if no one knows who I am. It doesnt bother me the least. However, I'm the guy that sees the car and how it performs before seeing the driver. Even if the car isnt as fast as others because the driver has less skill but still is an excelent performing car in the hands of a better driver then I give that guy some credit. I feel as if I finally have a grasp of whats going on inside a racecar and I want to test my understanding. The supsension geometries, roll stiffness, damping ratios, power curves stuff like that( I am a nerd) and how to change all of that to suit the drivers feel. Keeping the Audi just gives me the ability to do that. It may not be as fast as I dream it will be but regardless I'll get some experience from it and have a fun daily driver after its done.
And as far as school. That comes first. I wouldnt do something that takes away from school or causes my grades to go down. I've been in school for 4 years so I know what I can handle on the side. Actually doing this stuff helps me pay attention better. This wouldnt be something I'd waste all my time on. In fact I set a generous goal of december for it to be running pretty good by.
I respectfully disagree, but its personal preference. One really can't argue against another about personal goals/opinions. You have great talent, dont waste the chance to learn/drive!
