Steve's car thread. AKA: Cross Country prep

Yeah I got one now, my own thread.

So here is the deal with the Raddo. It already has some decent dampers on it, and decent wheels. So it will be getting, in somewhat of this order:

The Neuspeed springs that were in the trunk(score!)
Rear sway bar
Strut bars, front and rear
Tires
A/C fixed
And somewhere in there, a general tune up, and a good 'going over'

There is however, not much to do elsewhere. I think that Lou can appreciate this, as I'm sure he knows how quirky they can be. But here is the list of things that WORK on this Corrado, that I've rarely seen work on others.

The spoiler, up at 45, down at 15. And manually.
The windows, power, both of them.
The MFA
All wipers and crap on the stalks.

It's a very rare thing, and it makes me all giddy inside. I wish I could invite all of you to lay on the drivers floor and look up under where the steering column is, it's clean enough to eat off of. All original trim panels, everything. Anyways. This will be my thread. I will have Ian take some pictures. I suck at them. And I will catalog things I do, so I can be cool too.

Steve

The windows and the MFA work.....I dont believe that. LOL Looks like you will have to come out to the meet and show me.

Hey so does it have the stupid corrado windows were they are both power but you can only roll one down at a time?

Haha yeah. They do do that. I'm trying to hunt a 'slowness' issue right now. Will keep you guys updated. According to the MFA, the lader is boosting 13-14 PSI, which is good effing news.

Not yet, haven't had much time to clean it up. But this week I promise. I'm going to start tonight on cleaning it, give it a good clay bar, and then some polish. I want some minty blackness, and I see it under the current paint, just have to convince it to come out. Oh and install the springs, and maybe paint the wheels, I'm thinking black.

Ever wonder what happens if you don't check the part number of the springs that come with the car before installing them?

Well, nothing happens. The ride height remains the same. So lets google the number...I just installed a set of rear Passat VR6 springs. Dammit. Oh wells, I became well aquainted with my rear suspension, and should be able to do another set in like 20 minutes. Narf!

Yeah I know, I'm slacking. I did wash it though, have yet to polish, maybe I'll get to working on that today. I've just been busy, working on the cafe, fixing little things on the car. But so far:

A/C is fixed, just low, so it's all up to snuff. Still need to tint the windows, but it's still pretty good in there.

Found out the timing is off, this is a good thing, as it just didn't feel quite fast enough for 14psi.

Actually, maybe I'll go right now to get a clay bar, and then park her in the garage and let the paint cool down so I can do the polish....

Steve

P.S. Does anyone know the compatibility of MK2 GTI suspension parts and the Corrado? I have found differing opinions, some companies the same part number for the two, while some are different. Any thoughts? I only ask because a friend down the street has some springs for sale, cheap, but they are off of his MK2 GTI.

Umm yeah you need to get MKIII suspension. I know for a fact that works cause i traded my busted bilstien coils for some koni yellows and springs from a guy with a corrado

That's wonky....

Ok well quick check, Looks like I can use either MK2 or early MK3 springs/coilovers. But not late...weird. I could probably say though, most VW suspension seems to be the same, as I 'did' just install Passat rear springs into the car....super.

Ok, I am not photographer, more so when it's raining outside. I was out fiddling, finishing some things on it for tonight, figured I would snap a few shots. They suck, I know. But I'm proud of what I've pulled out of the paint. Clay bar, and polish, took a while, but check it.

Hood, still not perfect, but getting there:

Roof, no sunroof, I have since learned this is quite rare.

The two toys:

Interior, note the extreme lack of missing panels. smile

And one more:

I will be out tonight, just so long as this rain quits. The Raddo had the privelage of sleeping in the garage overnight, but not in a vagina 'I'm too pretty for the rain' kind of way. In more of a 'Steve doesn't feel like washing it AGAIN before finishing the polishing'. And I'm still not done. Ian has offered the garage for the car, but lots of things would have to be moved in order for that to happen, so not going to happen soon.

But comments welcome, still some things to do, but with minimal money into it so far, I think I'm doing pretty good. I have some engine pictures as well, but they turned out fuzzy. So I'm not posting it. Just imagine a G60 engine bay with every piece of trim, every cover, and every clip, but with a Bahn Brenner sticker on the plastic cover over the radiator, and thats the engine bay.

wow that is clean. looking really shiney. I dont know if you said but how many miles are on it?

I also noticed you're in the electric seatbelt club. I'm in that too.

I like the seats. They're in good shape still. Oh and whats that cord coming form the cd player?

I'll try to post some engine bay pictures tonight. And it's a G60, not 90, but close enough. Yes electric seatbelts, I sort of like them, just be aware of them if you are leaning in the window to start the car, they effing hurt.

But the paint is pretty shiny only because it's been worked on, still not perfect by any means, but not bad. I don't want to get all anal about the car, it is still my driver. I want to get to work on the suspension.

But yeah the interior is minty fresh for a Raddo. It's good stuff. Very nice place to sit in. And I even got the 'This car is sexy' from someone totally unrelated to the automotive world, and that is a good thing. And yes, it was not a guy, and it was of the female persuasion.

The cord is a aux input for my iPod. I'm on a mission. I intend to listen to all 2508 songs on my iPod, on shuffle. No where in the world will you go from Tom Waits to Aesop Rock but on WCLY. My last name is Clay, I thought it was funny, shut up.

But next week, or maybe this weekend, I hope to get some springs on, I'll probably end up going coilovers, but I think this will be a good start.

I've been thinking a lot about this the past few days. And no, before anyone assumes so, I'm not selling the Corrado, don't be silly. Nor am I selling the Cafe project. I am however at a serious decision point that effects both of them.

I did a quick tally, note, this was quick, and not counting all the silly things along the way, and the machine work for the engine or the paint, and the CB is going to take at least 1500 bones to finish. Scary to think that, even more so to think what I already have in it. So basically, I don't see myself finishing it anytime soon. Why? Well, I got a damn Corrado now, and I would love me some stuff for it. And it's retarded to even have a bike here in Orlando anyhow, when it's done I'll be so scared to ride it, it will only sit in the garage, not cool.

And it's not as if the VW NEEDS anything really. But I really want it to look/drive a certain way, and I can't do that while literally pouring money into the cafe. And the Cafe is at a point where I can't do anything else until I shell out some serious coin(engine work/paint). And as most people who know VW's understand, the G-Lader is a bomb with a very short fuse, I want to get this thing handled so I can jump in it and not sweat it, turbo or lysholm or whatever. And of course, the obligatory coil overs/sways/bushings. I love the damn thing, and I really want to have the Corrado I wanted to build years ago, but this time, I actually have the car to attach the parts to.

So multiple questions, thoughts on another form of forced induction for the car? Turbo would be the cheapest I believe, but lysholm is infinitely cooler. And maybe even think outside the box...N/A 16v? Maybe? And Lou, I'm sure you'll have some input on this, coilovers? Suggestions? Favorites?

Oh noes!

I bought Koni's with Neuspeed springs. I believe I'm going to turn this into my pavement pounder, road tripper, ashphalt eater, whatever you want to call it. What does this call for?

A not too serious drop(hence the Springs, and not coils.)
Strut bars, and still the rear sway.
A diffferent 5th gear, ratio wise, calms down the revs.
Preventitive Rado things, lube/clean the spoiler motor, stuffs like that.
Wheels, probably steel, in case I smack something, sledge them back straight.
And, wait for it....a VR. I have asked around, and people are justifying this as the best engine for the task. I'm honestly done trying to go fast. I just love to drive yo. And love to go places, and want an engine that can take me there without being strung out on the highway, and they do sound sweet.
Good sounding but quiet exhaust.
Stereo, a good setup, seriously, weird right?

I'm stoked about building the girl up. I still love seeing it outside the house, been a while since I've said that.

Koni/Neuspeeds are in. And god dam they are nice. A bit too stiff ATM, but did a ninja fast install last night before going out, so I'll screw with them today. I think the front needs to go down a little more, have to see what I'm going to do about that. Pictars to follow.

So like heres the deal yo. I really miss my ITB's. Would it be sacriligious to put a 16v/20v in the Rado and run some motorcycle throttle bodies? Not forced induction, just N/A....what do you guys think?

i cant get a hold of the kid with the VR6 corrado so i am not sure what to tell. Also as for the corrado goes, i think it would best if you left it stock or how it is now and not do anything to it. Even if you wanna drive to CO in it. That is just my .02

Well see, it's not stock...like at all. List of things:

Bahn Brenner 268/260 cam
BBM stg4 chip
Porsche 3.5 bar FPR
BBM 68mm pulley(14psi)
BBM ISV re-route thing

Problems with this setup:

It's effing loud, people who have heard it can attest to it.
The cam gives it a nice chunky idle, it shakes things.
It's 'OK' on the highway, but the bottom end is horrible. The cam doesn't really come to life until like 3k, makes it really hard to drive stoplight to stoplight.
It's a 1.8, and it gets 22mpg. yea...

I understand the usefullness of this setup, but for what I'm going to do with it, it's just stupid to have it. That poor G-Lader is going to be hateing life at about Texas, there is a video on youtube on how the charger works. If you watch it, imagine what it looks like at 3500rpm on the highway. No wonder these dam things blew up. I want something I can trust on the highway, it's only a matter of time before the Lader goes, I don't want it to happen really far from home. So this is how it goes:

Keep the PG bottom end, turbo it, FMIC, MS, tune it fat and hope for the best.
Stock VR6, intake, exhaust, do the chains/guides before install, stock EMS.
16V, 2.0, ITB's, MS.

I had considered just returning the engine to stock, getting the OEM pulley, an OEM cam, and all the other bits. But it would cost just as much, and be just as much labor, to just put a VR in it. In stock form, one can get a G60 to cover some hefty miles, someone on the forum has like 298k on theirs. But this has been through hell I'm sure, that pulley spins that charger up way too fast in my opinion, and you get one missed shift before it blows itself apart. Who knows what the previous owner did to the car. Yea, so that's my thoughts. I'm taking someone with me on this trip, and I am not wanting to break down in the middle of no where with her, then again, maybe I do, but I also don't want to have to get this thing fixed on the road.

OEM FTW.

Steve

i'd just go turbo, but a 16v with itbs sounds like a good idea too.

I vote itb's as well for the sound and throttle response. but if you want the power then go turbo. or vr6 is good too.
