I'll bet you thought these were over..

Bout that time again, the weather, being as such, entices me to get a car much sooner than anticipated. Only downside is that I must sell the bike to do so, and then buy another one or build another one down the road. I’ve learned it’s very difficult to operate with just two wheels, simple things turn into a big ordeal of planning and finding ways to carry things home with you. Fun for a little while, but when you ride to work in the AM and the ambient temperature plus the wind speed past your body at 45mph makes it feel like it’s below freezing, a windshield seems almost heaven. But in true car lover fashion, there are a lot of cars I find interesting, so many in fact I can’t decide and say, “I would like to buy a _____.” I find myself changing my mind far too often in the grand scheme of things. What I know that I want though, is something that isn’t going to be a project right off the bat, i.e., something relatively clean, which runs.

I’ve found several cars, but the ones that definitely catch my eye lately are as follows:
92 Jetta, Original owner, 90k miles, it’s just as clean as you’d expect.
85 AW11, clean as hell, and it’d be like old times.
86 AW11, cheapest of the bunch, but will need a bit more work.

There are obviously more, but I’ll spare the boring details. Long story short, I know I'm going to want to get another bike, and my thinking, is that if I get another mr2, I'm going to want to mod the **** out of it, and usually that would be ok, but I have a trip planned for next summer, and I need to make sure to have a reliable (read: bad ass) bike by then, so I need to save up. I just don’t think I could ‘just drive’ the aw11 stock, after having what I had before. The Jetta seems almost out of place with some of the cars I'm looking at, but it’s clean, unmolested, and runs perfect. And I'm thinking, like I wanted to do before, coilovers, wheels, and just call it a day; I could get away with ‘being done’ with that car for under a grand. And then just maintenance along the way, saving all the rest of my cash for my Ducati scheduled for early spring. I know I mentioned on here I was wanting to get another AW11, and I would love to, but with mine and Ian’s imminent move coming up, it would be silly to be tearing a car apart and cluttering up the garage, even more than it already is. So, as I usually say, thoughts?

Steve

4AG!  4AG!

You know them, they know you.  And its not like we dont have a Toyota parts department in a garage.

RWD>FWD

MR>FR

MR2 is way greater-than Jetta.

VW's are crap.  There I said it.  (Ban me)

Ok well the MR2 that needs work if that is Charles MR2 then get that. Cause i know he took care of that car the best he could. If you want a car that is a good daily get the jetta. As far as VW's sucking i am gonna have to say you suck. But then again it depends on what you want. If you want a car just to drive like i said get the jetta cause i would do the same. Now if i was looking for a car to get that was fun to drive and quick in the turns well then I would be the first one to tell you get the MR2.

If you're selling the bike regardless, I say MR2 cause then you'll still have a fun driver. If you can keep the bike and have a car then I say Jetta. I think its all up to you as what you want but I'd definately be interested in seeing what you'd do with a MR2.

See the thing is i know i'll be getting another bike in the spring, come hell or high water, so it almost doesn't make sense to build another go kart like car. I sure as hell want to, i'd love to do another, but i just don't see the point, build it all up, and then let it sit for when i want to go fast, in which i'll take the bike.

And then comes a long the money thing. Deuce parts are expensive, hard to find, if you don't have to make them yourself. And with such a car, you can't just dump it on coils, put some wheels on it and call it a day, because then it will handle like crap and still be slow. In short, it's not a cruiser, it's only got one purpose, to carve. I still like mk2's and i think it would make sense, insurance is less, i wont have 'too' much inclination to mod the hell out of it, which means i'll save more money.

Basically the way i'm looking at it, depending on what car i get, it will dictate which bike i can get in the spring. Something cheap/not heavily modified=Ducati(monster/748 undecided) Something that i'll mod the hell out just because it's there=Speed triple

So either way, it's not a bad deal, but, i'm a sucker for L-Twins. And i'm trying to think farther ahead this time, something that i can use for the future(Ian, moving remember? Summer roadtrip in a few years?) So but we'll see, i'm still up in the air, bike still isn't sold yet, so that will be the deciding factor, how much i get for it and when it happens. either way, everyone will probably know by next thursday, i hope.

Steve

BTW: Upon reviewing pricing, i dont even think a speed triple would be able to make it into the garage in the spring if i were to get a deuce and modify it how i would want it. It would have to be something much cheaper than a 3k$ triple. So i either go boring, low, and slow, and then get italian muscle. Or i build a bad ass MR and THEN figure out if i can even afford another toy.

I dont know how you are going to decide on a car when you cannot even decide on a bike.

If getting rid of the bike, to get a car, to get a bike is you big goal, then I would just say get a beater....  Anything in the "Cars Steve likes" catagory is going to be something that you are going to mod.  The rational thing is to get a AE101 4AFE rolla, B13 GA16 sentra, dare I say, a Civic or a 1G neon.  Because if you get a fun car, the normal thing to do is put money into that and you wont get a Duc, or a Triple or a (Some other bike that you are going to fall in love with in a week).  So Just get a beat ass ride, rock that for a few months and get a bike.  Then once that is out of the way, you can get a fun car.

You know I've always wanted a Duc, since day one. I may change my momentary lust for some other machine, but you know I've always wanted one. And now that i already have 2 wheels, i really want one. Not like when you are 10 and want a Corvette, this is something much more attainable.

BTW, i almost blew up the Bandit today.

Steve

BTW, Ian stop being a wanker. This is one of the most difficult decisions i've ever had to make with selling the bike. I will be miserable without it, and i've seriously considered not selling it since the weathet has been getting better. But necessity is a ****ty thing.

The FC gives me a chubby...

But, the jetta would probably be the smartest of the group.

Yeah it's a pretty nice FC, however, i've kinda decided against any car where i'd want to run it hard. And being as it's a Wankel, i kinda didn't want to learn the ins and outs of it when it'd be stricltly a daily. I'm going to go check out that Jetta tomorrow, if it's as clean as it seems to be, then i'll probably end up with that. Coilovers, CD/MP3 player, and just be done. Recently me and my good buddy Tyler were toying around ideas about a 600cc single cylinder powered cafe` racer, jetta being a great way to move parts around, and to keep me outta trouble with spending money on it. And being an original owner MK2, i'm hoping to not get a boat load of someone else's 'quick fixes' that are often so common with cheaper used cars.

so yeah what happened to the neon? if anything i think you should get a mini van or something lol. i heard they are good for trips and can hold a bunch of stuff. also nobody wants to really mod them. oh and you can probably make it into a moving garage for your bike.

well i ruled out the neon, i drove one at work, didn't really like it all that much, and i figured it would be too much money to get it awesome. but now I'm in the middle of another decision, trying to decide what to buy. that jetta sold the day before i got there, if it hadn't, i wouldn't have this problem. but now there are a few other rides i'm looking at. one of them being a pretty slick Datsun 510. i had one before, a ****ty one, but this one is seemingly much nicer, and he's only asking 1200 bucks.

obvious problems, carb'ed, old, no a/c, ever. i'm trying to decide if i want to sacrifice stuff like that for the ultra cool dime style. there was nothing cooler than rocking the blue antique plate. i just know summer is going to be a real bitch. but, it is altogether awesome.

mr2, obvious choice, but i think i need more luggage space, i think...i dunno.

mk2, definite possibility if i can find a clean one, but of course, i can't, at least not local or semi local.

Volvo, this interested me, rwd goodness, ability to carry four friends completely sideways. but, it's a Volvo, it's cool, but very limited after market if any.

s13, fan boyish, but i mean, lots of parts, really reliable if taken care of, and you dont have to do a lot to make it fun. but also, hard to find clean for a decent price.

i think i really want RWD, but i told myself i'd settle for FWD if the car is clean and unmolested. what do you guys think? I'm pretty much budgeting myself at about 2k, tops. anybody have any suggestions? I'm at my wits end trying to decide what to get. i want something that is going to stick too, I'm tired of buying/selling cars. so i want to get something i can really get into. not just 'settle' for something.

Steve

or should i just man up and get another bike? And just say, "**** you weather!"?

man, i thought i was fickle with cars, lol. dude a 510 would be freakin awesome, i thought about thata while back, but i had no luck in tracking one down. that fc looked 26 times better than any other fc i've seen for sale. as well as that mr2. you've definatly got some options, can't wait to see what you end up with!

yeah it's a real problem i have. that's why i'm having so much trouble deciding what i want next, because i don't want to deal with it again. at least for a while. just get something to ride around until i get my new bike. or just get a new bike. i just dunno.

steve

oh and BTW: that FC does look awesome, but he won't come off his price at all. and that mr2, i can't get a hold of the seller, so yeah. i hate buying cars.
