I recently got caught in the rain on my scoot, and i now understand the importance of having a roof to get me around as well as my 2 wheeler. Now comes the decision, i have a few options, i'd like to get back into the mk2 game, probably with a jetta. But i'll outline my options here. 1.)Lead on a 1996 base Dodge Neon, 5 spd. SOHC, 500 clams. 2.)1986 mk2 Jetta, auto, p/w, p/l(pretty rare i think), a/c(works too), 700 bucks. real clean car. 3.)1989 Jetta that needs a fair amount of body work, but is clean interior wise, also auto.
The neon off the bat sounds like a great buy, but i'm not sure it has enough character for me, and i really wanted to build a low/slow mk2. And that's the thing that keeps bringing me back to them. Neon=cheap fun(so i hear), but no character and you look like all the other people who dont give a damn about their cars(most neon owners). But parts availability is good and cheap, since i still work at dodge. But with the vw, wheels, coils, and just ride like that, but brings with it again having to find/get parts, but it's never stopped me before, with my other cars, but i've also never had all the parts
In about 2 years i want to take a cross country trip, and if i were to get a mk2 now, it could be a two year plan to get it all sorted, swapped, and manual'ed, i would love to take one across the country. I just can't see me doing that in the neon, actually, it's hard for me to see myself in the neon at all. So i'm gradually trying to rationalize the mk2, what do you guys think? If i had the money to get the srt transplant for the neon, it would be a no brainer, i'd do that. But this car needs to just be a driver, nothing fancy or fast, not for a little while at least.
So basically, someone tell me i shouldn't get a neon, and that i need to get an mk2. that's all i'm looking for really.

yeah the guy just pulled 100 bucks off the price. a 96 model year vehicle for 400 bucks is a steal anywhere, no matter what it is. probably just end up getting that. i'll build my mk2 someday.
Ok so let me get this, you are gonna buy another car. Why take that money and do some stuff to the GTI. Trust me i get bored with my jetta and then i think off the stuff i can do to it. Trust me you and I are the same person and i am sick of getting new cars every month or two. Keep your car in the long run its cheaper.
Think about all the times you have transfered titles and reg. that adds up and i know I could have had a sick MKII buy now if i still had my first gti.

my black mk2 got sold. couldn't deal with some of the problems that thing had. and the whole glued together thing. so i only have my bike, which is ok for now, but i know in a few months it's going to start raining everyday again, so i'll need a roof.
400 bucks is a really good deal on a car. I just paid 300 for a surfboard and all I got was foam and fiberglass. In the neon you'll be getting lots of metal, rubber, fabric, plastic, glass and all kinds of stuff assembled nicely into a working car. It seems really cheap when you look at what your getting. But I like the idea of the neon with the srt4 swap the best. It'd be fun to drive, different and definately a sleeper.
