shaft play = bad; but hopefully not fatal

so i had a little shaft play, w/e

then 100 miles later i get a whinning noise, like metal on metal. now i cant spinnit by hand. Eventually i take the turbo abart, expecting a bearing problem, a destrooyed seal, or a bent shaft. my finding reveal nothing of the sort. so i my new conclusion is becaause i had so much shaft play,an that the the compresser spline is missing a nut or something, that the turrbo was boucing off either side of the housing. thus when it is stuck to one side i can spin it.

well after taking it apart and not finding a blown seal or a ground up bearing, i pusher the splined together and eliminated the shaft play. so i think i will invest in a nut or something to keep it alittle tighter and see if that works

does that sound like a good idea or an aceptable line of thinking

i dont think you can really pull it all apart like that and just put it back together. I believe the entire shaft assembly has to be balanced. but i may be wrong....

i dont know, the guy at dynamic turbo was talking about how he could pull it apart for me and take a look, and i dont think they have that kind of stuff there.

after taking it apart its a pretty simple thing in there

after more studYing the shaft as a ring around the exhaust side that is compressed when inside the housing, with all the shaft play it got loose enought that the ring got outside the bearing it sites in and expanded, thus not allowing it to re enter the bearing and forcing it against the hot side of the turbo so it would not move.

interesting. I wouldnt recomend just putting it back together without balancing it. It looks like your blades got chewed up so that would definatley change the balance. they spin like 80,000 rpm so balance is important
