Mr. Project

Well i figured i'd start a thread that we can track our progress with the mr2 on.

today was my first look at the car in person. My overall thoughts are that the car is really rough.  there is a good bit of rust, and with 305,000 miles pretty much everything is worn out.  the hubs are super loose and wobbly, the rear tie rod is bent, there is crap hanging down from the bottom, there are no brakes....etc  plus all the crap that i already knew abt. (no engine, trans)

the buildup is totally possible, but we're going to need a LOT from the s/c car.  like all the suspension, hubs brakes, etc.

the rust i want to get rid of and we can practice our welding, rust repair techniques.

anyway here are the pics of what happened today

Seats, carpet, headliner, trim, consol are out

Misc. parts i found in the trunk or took out of the interior

Gutted the trunk, and found the ecu - it reads 4a-ge m/t

The airbox is actually in the trunk, and there is a cold air tube deal that runs all the way across the trunk, when i flipped it over i found this..

nice work!

what are we planning to do with this car after the repairs? are we going to us the 4a or swapping in the 5s?

I'm in for a 5s swap, but just to get it running with the 4a would be cool too.

sweet, looking better already. Ive got 2 shelves i can bring next time to put parts on.

viet has a master cylinder at his house but i think we still need to take pretty much everything off the s/c car

for the engine,i think it would be sweet to build a high revving motor but thats expensive so my current vote is for the 5s with a t3

Well like i told jamin, once i get the motor in the car and all the parts that i want or need i am giving you guys the car so you should have everything that you need. I really havent done much to my car besides the rear trime peice and that is about it. I cant wait to do the swap and also let me know what you guys are going to do swap wise. I think that you should at least put the 4a in it.

i dont know i think that if we ever want to use the 5s in it then its best to start with it. you know how those things go where you say "i'll just do this for now and change it later". usually never gets changed. but if you guys want to use the 4a then i'll go for that. of course theres always the 5sgte. ive seen 3sgte heads for 300 before and that could make some serious power. ive just had an itch to do something with that motor and and this is the first oppurtunity

the thing is we dont have a tranny for that motor.  we DO have a tranny for the 4age.  doing the 5sfe would require more money before we have anything that works

im off sunday all day and dont work until 1 on monday.  if you guys can get over here then that would be sweet cuz its my only day off until after xmas.  let me know, oh and bring a FD for carting the engine around.

Im also working on it thusday cuz i dont work till 7, and maybe after 5 on wed.  if anyone in the area wants to stop by give me a call.

we can swap the 5s and not deal with the 4a but that will be a long time before we get that done. So I think its better to get it running with the 4a since we will have everything for it. then just dump money into repairs, suspension, and crap for the 5s swap. Then 3sgte head swap after we get the 5s running.

oh and if we get the car running ppl will be more movtivated to invest into the car.

UPDATE 12/15/05

I pulled the car out of the garage today and cleaned out/organized the garage. It's much nicer to work in a nice clean garage.

On the mr2 i cleaned off all the shoe polish on the windows and scraped all the stickers off.   I also disconnected most the stuff that connects the engine to the car.  thats abt it really.

Sunday we should be able to pull the motor, along with the rest of the accessory crap.  get all the stuff thats hanging off the bottom off, and hopefully start cleaning up the car a little.  Maybe some rust removal too.

things we need sunday if you have them to bring.

-Extra jackstands

-extra floor jack

-sheet metal

-metal working tools (hammer, files, jigsaw, whatever you got to do rust repair)

-furniture dolly

and whatever else you think might be useful

ill bring the 2 jackstands and some tools

we going to leave it on jack stands while we work on it? i think that would be best since alot of the suspnsion needs work.

not really a big fan of those shapes.  we were thinking a

main hoop (only thing we'll have to get bent).

diagonal bar from top left to bottom right.

from the top corners back to the strut towers

and abt half way up on the main hoop, we will have diagonal bars that come down past the occupants forward to the floor.

there is no need for a harness bar, because we can just put the eyelets throught the rear firewall, with backing plates

like this

that seems like a pretty good design but how about connecting the side bars at a joint rather than pushing on the center of the main hoop?

something like this

and possibly tying in the stock cross bar and the front strut towers

How will there be entry and exit into the car with that design though?
