I bought a scooter. It was 50 bucks and is missing alot of pieces but it supposedly has a new engine and it has a title. I started making the seat. I just have to cover the plywood with padding and some material. I'm trying not to buy any parts and make everything from stuff in my garage. Here's some pictures.
flip up seat!
Ps: The reason I bought a scooter is because we wanted to go on a really cheap vacation so we bought scooters with the intention on riding them to the keys. If anyone else wants to go you gotta get a scooter.
I didnt take any pics of mine yet, but it looks exactly like this. I dont have the little trunk thing though.
its a "Hero Puch Winner" and its chinese. I rode it home from titusville, and did a little tune up work on it today...it should be running awesome tomorrow.
I'm halfway interested in this. So the keys yea? That's the plan? Maybe I'll start looking....are we limiting ourselves to two-strokes or four? I am assuming it wouldn't matter...but on the long haul I think four's would be a much better move..
Well so far i'm the only one with a two stroke. Jon's is a four and darren got a Honda Ruckus which is a four also.
We are shooting for a cruise speed of 40mph. Darren has it i think. Mine was cruising at 37 before the tuneup so i should hopefully be there. I replaced the cvt roller weights, and my "dry" belt was covered in greasy oil stuff so i had like zero acceleration so thats all clean now. also did the air filter and installed a lamborginhi countach spark plug and reconnected my auto oiler.
darren was also talking about making windshields, its supposed to give you 2-3 mph.
Make sure if you pick one up its not a direct drive, you want a cvt to have any kind of speed.

Yea we want to go as far as we can and end up by the Southern most point dome thing in Key west.
I finished the seat for my scooter and got the oil screen plug i was missing. I tried to fire it up but I'm not getting any spark. So we'll see, it might be something simple like a fuse. And even if something is bad, its $50 for an entire new "performance" ignition system.
i've actaully been thinkin about getting somethin 2-wheeled for a while. i don't know if i wanna get a scooter though, i found an old harley i think i wanna get.
"1974 Ironhead, it has brand new wide white wall tires. It also has a freshly rebuilt S&S Super carb, and I just had the front forks rebuilt. I was told the forks are around 4 to 6 over. Its got a very nice mustang seat with no rips or tears or any wear"

Um, for like a reasonable price? I'm trying to make my next project bike a Harley...

i've emailed him a few times with no response, i don't know if it's still for sale or not.
Not too bad. What kills me is how expensive older Harley's are for pretty much the bottom of the barrel technology wise. But as for my bike. Well, it's pretty dam close. Picture from about two weeks ago:
Since then a lot of things have changed. Most importantly, the pieces that are getting painted, are well, getting painted. The shifter is sorted, no rear brake yet. Oh and I have electrics, brake light, headlight(but no actual headlight yet), ignition power, and it all works with the key. I'm pretty stoked. Basically, if I had a fuel pet****, I could start it. So I say maybe a week or so before the first start. Hopefully I can get the rear brake sorted before then.
this dude Wan worked doubles at a restraunt in korea for a year to save up enough money to fly to the US, buy a honda ruckus, and scoot across the country. He went from NC to key west, back up florida and across the US to LA. Right now he's in California and working on getting his visa extended so he can scoot all the way back to NC possibly through Canada. bamf
He joined the ruckus forums, and ended up meeting a ton of the members, staying with them, and getting free meals and scooter parts. he camped on the side of the road, or went to a bar to make friends when he couldnt find a place to stay.
and steve, your bike makes me wanna get a cafe racer really bad lol. i found some old yamahas and hondas on craigslist. i'm so back and forth about what i wanna get, i think it's just gonna come down to what deal i can find at the right time.

Thats worth another look. Looks awesome. I'm really liking it.
That scooter guy is awesome. I really want to do a trip like that. I cant believe the scooter world is that big.
Thanks for all the kind words guys, honestly means alot. I've been on this thing for over a year now and it's really getting close, but there were times that I thought it wouldn't ever get done and I'd have to just part it all out. But seeing it rolling on it's own two wheels, with the electronics sorted(as of last night), and basically just waiting on paint to start up and be ridable, makes it all worth it.
What do I have into it? Ha, ask me when it's all over! Basically, a lot more than I had wanted to, but a lot less than I could have into it. I opted out of powdercoat, for many things, frame, wheels, random bits. While it may not look like a show winner, well dam it's a rider, built in my garage, and I want it to look that way, I don't want a show bike that I'd be afraid to ride in the rain, and cry the first time a rock smacks my tank. It's going to be ridden, and ridden hard, like all bikes should. Not to say it won't look good, and it will, but when people ask me, "That's a cool bike, who did the work on it?" I don't want to say that I assembled it, but had so and so do the powdercoat, had so and so do the paint, just not my cup of tea. Every single piece on this entire motorcycle has been through my hands, I like that. And another thing that I went for, I had originally planned for a much more modern suspension and brake setup, I started really looking around, mags and things, and obviously reconsidered. A lot of the parts on the bike are re-used and re-conditioned circa 70's parts. There is some rust, hell, there are even some dents, and ya know what? I like it like that. Every part has a little bit of a story to tell, and as a whole, the bike could dam well write a novel.
And as far as buying/building one? One piece of advice I can offer, just buy a running bike to start with. This build, while I'm grateful for the learning experience, wouldn't have taken half as long if I had a running/complete machine to start with. Yamaha's? XS650's, I wanted to do one, and why? TONS of parts available, more than the SOHC Honda's(what I have). And you can rephase the engines(not as hard as it sounds) to make it sound and run as hard as a modern day SV650. Yea, like as in keep up with one, just a note, that is extremely fast for an older bike. And, also keep in mind, one does not need to build a 'cafe' style bike with these machines. I've seen plenty of choppers and bobbers built from older metric bikes. In fact, grab the latest issue of "The Horse", there is a CB750 chop in there that the guy has 1500 bones into, and it's sick as hell. Hardtail setups are abundant, about 300 for a weld on kit, and you're halfway there. Like I said, Harley's are cool, and have a very nice aura about them, but if it comes down to it, and I had to pick one bike to ride across the country, it wouldn't be the 1903 tractor engine. Just a thought. Oh and Honda still produces a lot of parts for the older bikes, more so now because the 'cafe' thing is pretty popular. I usually get most of my parts within 3 days, if that.
Oh, and I need to wet sand the tank, shoot one more layer of paint, and then I'll put it on the frame to show you guys what it looks like. Sorry I got kinda carried away up there. I just heart my vintage bikes.
Well the bike is rare. But in my opinion not worth the price he is asking. For one, it's not original, yea it has an NOS crank, but that means it's been opened, and the tank and seat are also not original pieces. So yea. I could build that bike, minus the gear driven cam engine, for obviously a lot less than that. And have a bike that I wouldn't feel bad about riding. But seriously, for anywhere close to 100K, that bike should be absolutely perfect, original EVERTHING, with no miles on it, and documentation as to where it was stored, indoors and in climate control, with no rust in the tank, nothing, everything should be perfect. And even then! I posted it up on my SOHC forum, lots of knowledge up there, see what they think.
But Jamin, let me get the bike relatively assembled, gotta get the tank on it and such, and then you can come check it out. Right now it's nothing much more than a rolling chassis with an engine in it. But as far as building one after you graduation. I know of a CB550 for sale right now for I believe 450 bucks. Hint hint...
