Bike for me and roommates?

ok, so I've gotten wind of a 250 ninja for sale with low miles, for 2,000. and my roommates and I have been toying with the idea of splitting it 4 ways. 500 bucks to get a good learning bike. None of us have bike experience, so a 250 would be safer for us to not kill ourselves. what do you guys think of this plan? I just keep thinking, what if one of us gets more into it and wants to buy the bike from everyone else or we all want to get our own, how will that work? but we are all cool with each other and I'm pretty sure we could work it out. and btw, how much more fun are bikes than cars, I know its apples and oranges.  We'd all have to take the class as well. I have a helmet though, haha! noone else has any type of gear. ok, input please.

Go take the MSF, it will get you your lisence, and a lot of valuable information. Do that first. The Ninja 250 is a bad ass little learner bike, but it will still hurt you just the same as a Hayabusa, just takes longer to get there. Keep in mind though, a bike is only as fast as you want it to go. Doesn't matter if it's a scooter or a harley, your wrist is what regulates the speed, not the engine size.

Do it like this, MSF, I think it's like 250$, then gear, say 600-700$. What kind of helmet do you have? Buy the best one you can, if it's a few years old, or been kicked around the house for a while, buy a new one. You won't care how much it cost when you smack your head on the curb after falling. Buy a jacket, textile(not leather), go to Cycle Gear, try on EVERYTHING, key is fitment, if it doesn't fit you, it will be uncomfortable, and it won't protect you in a wreck, and you'll spend part of your brain thinking about how it binds in the sleeves and not thinking about the truck that's merging into your lane. Buy good gloves, people don't think about this, ever ride a bicycle? When you fall, what's the first thing to hit the ground? Your hands, my gloves are good enough to track with, they are hot as balls, and they are thick, but let me tell you how many times I've been smacked in the hand with a rock and not felt it because of them. Boots, to many this seems like overkill, read a story about someone sliding along the pavement on their back and hitting a curb with their feet, thusly shattering their ankles because they have Nike sneakers on. Boots are expensive, but like everything else, buy the best you can afford. I can yap for hours on this, as I don't understand the thought process people go through when they decide to ride without proper gear. It's a simple way to save your skin, takes me like 60 seconds to put all my stuff on.

But as far as it being more fun than a car, it depends what your idea of fun is. I LOVE riding, but Orlando sucks for it, straight up, too many idiots, and too much heat(in the summer). So I don't honestly care when the Cafe is done, because I don't want to get smacked on the road by someone on their cell phone. I solely rode for a while without a car, and would I do it again? Maybe, but not here, good experience, but not something I want in this city. Motorcycles are fun, but they are something you have to respect and understand that in a fight of Bike Vs. Car, car always wins. Ride like everyone is out to kill you, and FOCUS, that is key.

Go out and buy Keith Code's book, "Twist of the wrist." They are at Cycle Gear, read it, twice.

Oh and as far as the four way split thing, that's cool if you guys can handle it, but not something for me. As you can honestly go out and buy a good bike to learn on for yourself for 500-1000 bucks, I can help you work on it, get it into good running condition. Learn on it, drop it, beat on it, then move on to another, bigger bike if you are still interested in riding.

thanks for all the info, I'll be debating this for a while I think. My helmet is an m rated, snell 2005, less than a year old and in great condition, I will be fine with that. the whole heat thing and crazy drivers in Otown might sway me towards spending money on car mods though, I'll think about it. But thanks a lot.

For me it's like this.

The car I was going to do anything to(the Corrado), just got a set of Koni's, while the bike still sits dismantled in the garage. Orlando is retarded for riding.

i think jon is talkin bout a mountain bike.

but in somewhat related news, i have been riding my bicycle nearly every day to school and around town and i agree about everyone being out to kill you.  in the last 2 weeks i've had way too many come cars way too close for comfort.  One dickhead in a ford pickup almost caught a U-Lock to the face from a guy i was riding with.  you start to see traffic differently...

put that cash into the civic, brah

Nope not a mountain bike. It will be petrol powered and 4-stroke.

I feel the same way about florida drivers. When I was riding my bike to school more often I rode kinda NYC messenger style and it was alot of fun but I kept telling myself I have to calm down cause people in cars dont percieve bikes any different than those armadillos that later turn into bumps in the road. Although on the other side I rode my bike a couple days ago and twice people stopped on a busy road to let me cross. I was surprised.

yeah, jamin I saw you riding your bike across alafaya the other day, it looked to me like you were with Dave too? I don't know though.
about the bike though, I am definitely holding off on that idea. Gonna get wheels/tires and koni yellows and maybe a little something else before thinking about a bike. But if my roommate gets one, I'll definitely be on it occasionally. I should have rims/tires by christmas or at least soon after. then the koni's, they will be fun to install, and I will need much help, but only when that time comes. thanks guys.

if you can handle it do it.. bikes are fun.. and don't require insurance.. and if you get a bike cheap enough, insurance wont matter. your probably ****ed wrecking a bike anyway.. i regret selling my bike almost everyday really.. and it wasnt even really my kinda crowd, you know, the wheellie happy bros that dont wear helmets.. i have a question for you orlando kids though.. have you ridin anywhere else in florida??? now being in orlando, and without a car at the moment, i want a bike again bad... and orlando has more slow traffic (clogged roads, slow speed) then tampa and i had close calls all the time, and think it would be easier to deal with these orlando sunday driving tourists agressively..

Orlando really sucks for riding a motorcycle. It's not about the traffic, it's about the idiots that drive here, and the mass of people driving without insurance, immigrants, people who don't care, crackheads, etc etc. I have been run off the road more times than I could count, and one I actually ended up in the median, in the sugar sand, and was somehow able to put a foot down(at 45mph) keep myself upright, hop a curb, and get back on the road. All I could think of was "Ok, now how can I get off this thing without hurting myself too badly." But was somehow able to keep it upright and going straight. I sold my bike a few weeks after. Do I miss it? Fuk ya! Do I miss it enough to risk it again? Hellz no. The last thing I want to do is get creamed by some fuking sorority girl on her cell phone. Not to say that it can't happen in a car, or on a bike in another city, but having first hand experience here, I can say it would be much more likely. And at least in a car you have a fighting chance. In the end, a bike will always lose to a car.

And on that note, it's part of the reason I am moving. As I do love to ride, but gosh, sitting in Orlando traffic in the 95 degree(10000 bazillion in my helmet) heat just doesn't do it for me anymore. Rocky mountains here I come.

Well it's true cities will be cities, Denver is effing busy, and you have to be careful, of course. But the good thing about out there, at least for riding, is that there are actually worthwhile roads to ride on, and you can be out of the city in minimal time, and on good riding/driving roads. And when I was out there, I didn't have one single issue with people being idiots, which is surprising, as it seemed at times much more busy than here.
